Format of Competition

The competition was split into junior and senior divisions, with both divisions competing in the same two days of competition, where the all-around was contested on both days.

The senior division of these Championships also served as qualifications into the Olympic Trials.

Notable Moments

  • Five members of the Magnificent 7 competed at Nationals, but not all of them lasted. Jaycie Phelps withdrew after the first day of competition. Dominique Moceanu withdrew from the Olympic Trials. Shannon Miller only competed on uneven bars on the second day of competition and petitioned into the Olympic Trials. Amy Chow and Dominique Dawes finished in good standings.
