The 2009 Visa National Championships took place in Dallas, Texas on August 13-15th.

Format of Competition

The competition was split into junior and senior divisions, with both divisions competing in the same two days of competition, where the all-around was contested on both days. The gymnasts who specialized and only competed certain events had to scratch (touch the apparatus then salute the judges) on the apparatus they chose not to compete. The combined total at the end of the second day of competition would stand as the gymnast's final score.

Notable Moments

  • Of the team that competed at the Olympics in Beijing, four of them competed at Championships: Bridget Sloan, Sam Peszek, Chellsie Memmel, and Nastia Liukin. Liukin and Memmel only competed on balance beam, Peszek competed on everything except uneven bars, and Sloan competed the all-around.
  • Prior to Championships, Kayla Williams competed at the JO Nationals as a Level 10 gymnast. One of the National team coordinators invited her to a training camp to help her turn elite so she could qualify for Championships and make the National team. Williams was the only gymnast to perform two vaults at Championships, and went on to become World Vault Champion in London a few months later.
