The 2012 Visa National Championships were held in St. Louis, Missouri on June 8-10th. These were the last National Championships to be sponsored by Visa.

Format of Competition

The competition was split into junior and senior divisions, with both divisions competing in the same two days of competition, where the all-around was contested on both days. The gymnasts who specialized and only competed certain events had to scratch (touch the apparatus then salute the judges) on the apparatus they chose not to compete. The combined total at the end of the second day of competition would stand as the gymnast's final score.

The senior division of these Championships served as qualifications into the Olympic Trials. The top 8 in the all-around automatically advanced to the Trials, and several more could petition in.

Notable Moments

  • This was the fourth National Championships where a gymnast from the top two (Gabby Douglas) wins the Olympic All-Around Title, after Mary Lou Retton in 1984, Carly Patterson in 2004, and Nastia Liukin in 2008. This was also the second time that the second-place finisher would go on to win the Olympic All-Around Title, after Nastia Liukin in 2008.
  • Nastia Liukin competed in her first two-day competition since 2009. She looked good in podium training, but had a surprisingly poor showing on both bars and balance beam.
  • Rebecca Bross decided to follow Liukin in becoming a two-event specialist, dropping vault and floor exercise. This was her first big competition (not counting the Jesolo Trophy) since her knee injury in St. Paul the previous year.
  • McKayla Maroney fell on her back during warm-up for floor exercise just prior to the second day of competition. She was sent to the hospital after showing signs of a concussion. She scratched the second day of Championships, but successfully petitioned into the Olympic Trials
  • Alicia Sacramone won her sixth National title on vault, about eight months after tearing her Achilles tendon.
  • At the end of the first day of Championships, Gabby Douglas and Jordyn Wieber were tied at the top of the standings. However, a fall on balance beam brought Douglas down to second place at the end of the competition. She did, however, win the National title on uneven bars.
