The 2012 Olympic Trials took place on June 28 to July 1 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. This competition determined who would represent the United States at the Olympics in London.

Format of Competition

The competition was the same as the Visa Championships. There were two days of competition, where the all-around was contested on both days. The gymnasts who specialized and only competed certain events had to scratch (touch the apparatus then salute the judges) on the apparatus they chose not to compete. The combined total at the end of the second day of competition would stand as the gymnast's final score.

At the end of the second day of competition, the gymnast with the highest all-around placing won a guaranteed spot on the Olympic team. The other four spots would be decided by USA Gymnastics and the Olympic selection committee. The team would be announced after the competition finished, a method last used at the 2000 Olympic Trials.

This year, only five girls could make up the Olympic Team, as opposed to the usual six.
