The 2013 European Youth Summer Olympic Festival was held at the Galgenwaard Sports Centre in Utrecht, Netherlands, between 14 and 19 July 2013. The gymnastics competition began on the 17th. Athletes must have been born in 1998 or 1999 to be eligible.

Format of Competition[]

The competition format was similar to that of the Olympics. All participating gymnasts, including those who were not part of a team, participated in a qualification round, which also served as the team final. Each team could only have three gymnasts perform on each apparatus, and all three scores counted toward the team total. The results of this competition determined which individuals participated in the remaining competitions, which included:

  • The all-around competition, in which only the twenty-four highest scoring individuals in the all-around competed. Each country was limited to only two gymnasts in the all-around final.
  • The event finals, in which the eight highest scoring individuals on each apparatus competed. Each country was limited to two gymnasts in each apparatus final.

Notable Moments[]

  • Russia's Maria Kharenkova and Germany's Kim Janas were tied for first at the end of the all-around. A tie-breaker was induced and Kharenkova was awarded the gold. Conversely, there was no tie-breaker for bronze on balance beam, due to France's Claire Martin and Romania's Andreea Iridon having identical D and E scores.
