Current status

Anamaria Tămârjan (born May 8, 1991 in Constanţa, Romania) is a retired Romanian gymnast. She represented Romania at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Early Career

Tămârjan began gymnastics at the age of 4 years old along with her identical twin sister Adriana. She moved to the Oneşti Junior National Training Center when she was 12 years old and then to the senior national training center at Deva a few years later. In 2006 Tămârjan competed at the Romanian National Championships where she placed 6th in the all-around. She missed out on the 2006 Junior European Championships later that year due to an elbow injury.

Senior Career

Tămârjan became a senior elite in 2007. That year she made the Romanian World team but broke her leg while training uneven bars and was replaced by Andreea Grigore. Tămârjan also missed the 2008 Romanian National Championships due to injury. At the 2008 European Championships she helped her team win a gold medal in the team final as well as a bronze medal on floor exercise.

Tămârjan made the Romanian Olympic Team. She competed on all four events in qualifications to help the Romanian team qualify in fourth place. Despite a 16th place finish in the all-around in qualifications, she was not able to advance to the all-around final due to the two-per-country rule. In the team final she competed on all four events again and helped the team win a bronze medal.

Despite struggling with health problems at the 2009 European Championships Tămârjan qualified 2nd in the all-around and on balance beam and 5th on floor exercise. She fell on floor exercise during the all-around final and placed 5th but went on to win a silver medal on balance beam and to place 4th on floor exercise. Later that year Tămârjan competed at the 2009 World Championships in London. She advanced to the all-around final and placed 9th.

Upon Tămârjan's return to Romania following the World Championships she underwent double knee surgery. She retired from elite gymnastics in June 2010.
