The 2018 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships will be held at the Aspire Academy Dome in Doha, Qatar from October 25 to November 3. The host city was confirmed in March 2014.[1] This is the first time the World Championships will be held in Qatar and the Middle East. These World Championships also served as the first qualifications into the 2020 Olympics.

Format of Competition[]

All participating gymnasts, including those who were not part of a team, participated in a qualification round. The results of this competition determined which teams and individuals participated in the remaining competitions, which included:

  • The team competition, in which the eight highest scoring teams from qualifications competed. For the first time, each team of could only have five gymnasts. Three gymnasts perform on each apparatus, and all three scores counted toward the team total.
  • The all-around competition, in which only the twenty-four highest scoring individuals in the all-around competed. Each country was limited to only two gymnasts in the all-around final.
  • The event finals, in which the eight highest scoring individuals on each apparatus competed. Each country was limited to two gymnasts in each apparatus final.

Qualifications[]

In accordance with the new qualifications system, the top three countries in the team final automatically qualify a full team to the 2020 Olympics. The top 24 countries from qualifications qualify full teams to the next World Championships.

Notable Moments[]

  • Jonna Adlerteg became the first Swedish gymnast to qualify for an event final since 1954, qualifying 7th into the uneven bars final.
  • With an all-around podium of Simone Biles, Murakami Mai, and Morgan Hurd, this marked the first time in World Championship history that the all-around was swept by women of color.
  • Simone Biles now holds the most World all-around titles of any female gymnast: four. She also tied with Svetlana Khorkina as the most decorated female gymnast in World Championship history with twenty medals, became ninth gymnast in history to win a World medal on every event, and has more World gold medals than any gymnast in history, male or female.
  • Murakami Mai achieved the highest all-around placement for a Japanese gymnast: second.
  • The Longines Prize for Elegance was awarded to Russia's Angelina Melnikova.
  • Alexa Moreno became the first Mexican gymnast to win a World medal.
  • Nina Derwael became the first Belgian gymnast to win a World title.
