Nailya Fargatovna Mustafina (Russian: Наиля Фаргатовна Мустафина, born November 5 in Moscow) is a Russian artistic gymnast. Her older sister, Aliya, is one of Russia's top gymnasts and a multiple Olympic and World Champion.
Career[]
2008[]
Mustafina made her international debut in 2008, at the International Gymnix in Canada, where she won gold on floor, silver on beam, and bronze in the all-around. She went on to win another gold on floor and silver medals in the all-around, vault, bars, and beam at the WOGA Classic. That spring, she competed at the Pacific Rim Championships, winning silver on floor and placing fifth with the Russian team and twelfth in the all-around. Following her outstanding international results, Mustafina was dubbed the "next big thing" in Russian gymnastics at a mere eleven years old. With her 1996 birthdate, she was a hopeful for the London Olympic Games.
2009[]
In 2009, Mustafina sustained a broken femur when she fell off the uneven bars and took time off to recover. She also went through puberty and a growth spurt during her recovery. When she was able to compete again, she struggled, performing watered down routines.
2010-2013[]
From 2010 onward, Mustafina has only competed in domestic meets and has not been added back to the National team. She continued to compete in hopes to make the Russian Olympic team in 2012, but didn't succeed. Her most recent competition was the Voronin Cup in late 2013, where she only competed on beam and floor, but did not make the event finals. She has not yet officially announced her retirement.
