Béla and Márta Károlyi
Ugureanu began gymnastics at the age of 6 years old. She trained in Bucharest until she was 12 years old and went to train with Béla and Márta Károlyi. Ungureanu competed in her first Romanian National Championships in 1971 and won the all-around competition in the junior division. For most of her career Ungureanu came in second place to teammate Nadia Comăneci.
In 1976 Ungureanu was chosen for the Olympic Team. In Montréal Ungureanu helped the team to a silver medal finish in the team competition. Individually, Ungureanu earned a silver medal on uneven bars and a bronze medal on balance beam as well as placing 4th in the all-around final.
Two years later in 1978 Ungureanu went on to represent Romania at the World Championships in Strasbourg. She helped her team earn a silver medal in the team competition but did not advance to any individual finals. Ugureanu's last competition before retirement was the 1979 Universiade where she won the all-around gold medal.
Following retirement Ungureanu married a fellow Romanian gymnast. She and her husband worked with a traveling circus before moving to France to coach. In 1993 the couple moved to the United States to coach. They currently are directors and coach at Dynamic Gymnastics in Mohegan Lake, New York.
Ungureanu was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2001.
